Lakota Dress. 60" from cuff to cuff, 46" long. Buckskin dress with fully beaded yoke featuring two shades of blue, red and white with yellow accents. The skirt is decorated with pairs of hide thongs fed through large beads. Lovely long fringe. Circa 1910. Provenance: The Luther R. and Frances T. Zehner Collection. The dress was made by Julia Singing Ghost, niece of Mary Iron Shield and was purchased by Dr. Zehner at Fort Yates from Mary Iron Shield and her husband Bernard, April 20, 1950. Zehner recorded in his diary, "While Frances was washing the dishes she said that a real old Indian woman was coming up the street. Sure enough, there was and she was wearing moccasins too. Behind her came a man carrying a heavy pasteboard box. Then they turned into our walk and knocked on the door." A later note in the diary of 6/10/1950 provides provenance, "Dress-her brother's daughter, Julia Singing Ghost, made 40 years ago."
