Gerard Curtis Delano (1890-1972) Demand for Trade Goods 14" x 28.25" ink on paper Signed lower right Verso: Sketch of pen and ink, along with published "Story of the West," by G.C. Delano. "1821- While the Hugh Glenn party was in route to Santa Fe in 1821, two traders Thomas James and John McKnight reaches Santa Fe ahead of them with a party(?), not however without nearly losing their lives. They took a more southerly route and through Comanche country. The Comanches were about to murder them but friendly Comanche Chief Cordero, in company with the detachment of Mexican crooks(?), arrived in time to save their lives. This John McKnight was the brother of Robert McKnight, who went to Santa Fe in 1812 and was still being held prisoner at this late date. John McKnight, after reaching Santa Fe subsequently obtained the release of his brother, Robert. John, though, saved from the Comanche, seems to have been fated to be killed by Indians, for he later met his death at their hands." $8,000-12,000
