Collection of Native Photographs
28 photographs of Natives living on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. Largest is 13” x 9”, smallest is 12” x 7”.
Circa 1920-1940. Lot includes four framed photos, remaining unframed photos in a portfolio, and a copy of the book Photo Album published by Rosebud Educational Society.
$8,000-12,000
Provenance: The photographs in this collection were identified, authenticated and catalogued largely by Dr. Jack W. Marken of South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, and Julie Kills In Water, Native consultant from Spring Creek, SD. Their work, which encompassed two summers, was funded with assistance from the National Endowment for the Humanities, South Dakota Chapter.
The Photo Album Project, as it was called, was completed to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of St. Francis Mission and School established in 1886 on the Rosebud Reservation at Mission, SD. Originals of many of the photographs are housed at Sinte Gleska University. Nine of the 28 photos in this collection are included in the Photo Album published by Rosebud Educational Society in 1976.
