Chevron Beads
Four, seven layer chevron glass trade beads. 38-42mm wide. Location of discovery is unknown, but seven layer Chevrons have been recovered (rarely) from Eastern seaboard sites from Virginia to Peru. Late 1400s or early 1500s.
Glass beads were made in Murano, Italy and traded exclusively by the Spanish to Native Americans along the Eastern seaboards of Central and South Americas. These beads were almost certainly carried to the New World by Columbus, Pizzaro, Balboa, or Cortez. Contrary to popular belief, they were the only Chevron beads ever traded to Native Americans and are extremely rare.
$800-1,200
Provenance: Private Collection, White Bird, ID. Collector's notes to accompany the lot.
