Andy Thomas (1957 - ) Blackfeet Phantoms 24" x 36" oil on canvas Signed lower left $30,000-40,000 The various Blackfeet tribes were at their height around the middle of the 19th Century. Indian counterparts, as well as whites, considered them some of the most formidable and warlike people on the Northwestern plains as well as the most bloodthirsty nation on the upper Missouri. They were known to conduct raids eastward into Cree country and down the Missouri into Assiniboin territory. They pushed southward into Flathead, Crow and even further into Shoshone country. The purpose of the majority of their raids, as surprising as it may seem, was not to exterminate their fellow tribes, nor even to acquire their territories, but to acquire their horses. Thus, the more successful the raid, the higher their esteem and prominence was within the tribe, based on the number of horses gained for each member. The leaders of these raids were always seasoned and skillful warriors. The central goal was to gain spoils from an enemy camp without losing any members of his own party. For this reason, the most courageous, alert and aggressive leader was chosen to lead the sometimes otherwise novice band, eager to elevate their status. Our 2018 premiere of Andy Thomas's Blackfeet Phantoms accurately depicts the fearlessness and focus of a party headed out on a morning raid.
