1864 Factory Engraved Henry Rifle
1864 Factory Engraved Henry Rifle
23" barrel, .44 caliber. Serial #5384. On the receiver and buttplate, the fine original factory engraving of Samuel J. Hoggson is evident. Hoggson was a skilled engraver who performed most of the engraving work for the New Haven Arms Company on earlier Henry Rifles. The rifle is engraved with typical floral designs of vines, leaves and flowers, with the left sideplate engraved with a detailed dog on point. The front sight is of German silver and is original. "H" mark is stamped in lower tang, serial number found at the top rear of the barrel. Assembly number 579 is clear and can be found under the loading sleeve. Beautifully engraved, unusual cloverleaf buttplate and a nice deluxe walnut buttstock given a "piano finish". The top portion of the buttplate has scalloped shaped sides and extends farther forward than a standard buttplate, indicating this may be a "one-of-a-kind" rifle as stated in the letter of authenticity included with the lot. Exceptional condition considering age and use.
