Purchase of Firearms

March In Montana follows all Federal, State and local laws pertaining to the sale and transfer of firearms. It is your responsibility to follow any applicable State and local laws pertaining to your state of residence. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) is the federal body governing the sale of firearms. More information may be found on their website at www.atf.gov

There are 3 basic categories of firearms: Antique, Curios or Relics (C &R) and Modern.

Antique firearms are those manufactured PRIOR to December 31, 1898.
Anyone may purchase an antique firearm
You may take possession of an antique firearm at the auction or it may be shipped directly to you. Shipping and handling charges will apply
You should never attempt to fire an antique firearm (or any used firearm) prior to an inspection by a reputable firearms expert

Curios or Relic firearms are those “which are of special interest to collectors by reason of some quality other than is associated with firearms intended for sporting use or as offensive or defensive weapons”. There are different qualifications for Curio/Relic status, though in general, they must be at least 50 years old (manufactured prior to 1964) and possess some type of unique or collectible feature(s). C & R firearms will require an FFL dealer involvement. Please see below for guidelines/instructions.

Modern firearms are those manufactured AFTER December 31, 1898 that do not qualify as a Curio or Relic firearm and will require an FFL dealer involvement. Please see below for guidelines/instructions.

Guidelines/Instructions:
As stated above, Antique firearms may be purchased, paid for and picked up or shipped directly to you by March in Montana.
All C&R and Modern firearms (lots 125, 125, 126, 127, 128, 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 229, 257, 258, 277, 278, 280, 281, 282 ,283, 284, 623, 624 and 625) will be returned to Cheyenne (WY) for processing through an FFL licensed dealer. Once items have been paid for, items will be transferred to the licensed Wyoming dealer. From there, Federal law dictates that the firearm must be shipped to an FFL licensed dealer in your home state, once the Wyoming dealer has received a copy of your dealer’s license number.

Shipping and Fees:
All guns (long guns or hand guns) will be assessed handling, packing, shipping & insurance fees. Long guns will be assessed a $60 fee. Hand guns, since it is required by law that they be shipped via Next Day Service, will be assessed a $100 fee.

Taking possession:
Once your firearm arrives at the licensed dealer in your home state, the dealer will run a Federal background check (known as an NICS check) before allowing you to take possession of the firearm(s). It is customary for the dealer to charge a fee for their services. Fees will vary from dealer to dealer and state to state.

International purchases:
Not applicable. March In Montana does not allow the sale of any firearms outside of the U. S.
