Brian Bateman (1961 - ) First Encounter 21" x 26" oil on linen Signed lower left $3,000-5,000 1920: A U.S. Airmail pilot en route from North Platte, NE to Cheyenne, WY puts his DH-4 down in a Nebraska meadow due to mechanical failure near a Cheyenne reservation. Upon landing, the tribe was conducting a ceremony in traditional dress when they went over to investigate this man from the sky, as they had never seen a plane up close, let alone a pilot. As the mother and her daughter tentatively and shyly approached the man dressed in leather and flight gear, the little one is anxious and tentative. Sensing this, the pilot, with his face full of castor oil from the aircraft, kneels down and timidly reaches out his hand in friendship as the little girl is secure with her mother telling her that it is okay to say hello. For the Native Americans, the world in which they now live is unrecognizable to them as progress pushes their way of life behind.
